Antique Row

Margaret Loperfido (while employed at Belt Collins) was the project manager and senior design for the urban design and landscape architecture portion of this roadway reconstruction project. S. Broadway has been known as a high-speed retail strip. This project is a piece of the effort to transform this unfriendly roadway to an attractive retail and mixed-use corridor that provides safe, comfortable and attractive facilities for pedestrians, bikes and transit users while maintaining efficient vehicular access.

This project included a new raised, planted median with xeriscape plantings to establish a formal urban rhythm of color and texture. Sidewalk alignments were formalized to create a consitent and predictable pedestrian experience that is accessible to all. Seatwalls at corners and transit stops provide mini urban plazas and create safe nodes for pedestrians. Over 80 new urban trees were planted in extra large tree pits with structural soil to improve the longevity and health of these trees in this intense urban environment.
